A timeless classic staple of English style, Corduroy is considered to be a very dependable, durable and comfortable cloth, with thick and plush qualities used by the finest outfitters for classic pieces of mens tailoring. Providing a neat and smart appearance, it also wears sympathetically and suits a ‘lived in’ and relaxed look, as does a cherished and time-worn gentleman’s corduroy blazer. Its for these qualities we believe it works wonderfully well for upholstery, and often recommend it for use in all styles of homes, as it pairs very well with other equally durable materials, such as leather, canvas’s, heavy linens and velvets.

The name Corduroy comes from the French, Cor Du Roi, as the cloth was widely used in the17th and 18th centuries for servant uniforms in the royal households of France. Extensively woven in Lancashire and Yorkshire throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, sadly UK production has now ceased, with the last mill closing in Hebden Bridge in the 1980’s, and production moving to Austria. In many European countries, corduroy is still called Manchester, after the largest city in the original British production region, from whence corduroy was traded and moved by canal around the UK, or to coastal export towns like Liverpool, and the world beyond.

This heavier weight corduroy works very well on upholstery receiving heavy wear, in a cosy country house snug where muddy boots and dogs are welcome. It works especially well as a equivalent or substitute for velvets, due to its soft comfortable pile. This corduroy is especially good for making heavy and luxurious curtains, also for scatter cushions and other interior accessories.

Cleaning Advice

This fabric is not preshrunk so please expect a little shrinkage when washed. We recommend a cold wash. The pile of the cloth may be disturbed by washing, but we would expect it to return to its original softness after some time and use.
