These ecru coloured Leicester shearlings are something special; thick, silky and lustrous, with a beautiful naturally varying pale colour. Either thrown over a chair or used to cover upholstery, they are pure comfort and softness!

The Leicester sheep breed is indigenous to the British isles and was exported to many sheep-rearing countries in part due to it’s attractive fleece: naturally ecru-coloured, very lustrous and curly. In Sweden they refer to them as the ‘White Gotland’, so whilst the breed originates from the UK, these sheep have been reared in southern Sweden and crossed with local breeds. We get an extremely limited number of these Ecru skins each year as they are incredibly rare; we are more often out of stock than in stock, so please enquire as far ahead as possible so we can try to reserve shearlings for your project.

The skins are prepared and treated with the upmost care at the tannery, and all aspects of the work is done with the smallest possible impact on the local environment.

They are unbleached, coming in all shades of off-white – the naturally occurring colours of the sheeps wool. We find them the most beautiful this way, unbleached and unaltered. Typically the industry standard is for white sheepskins to be bleached to a perfect all-over white. The fleece is plush and curly, often with smaller tighter curls at the neck, moving into larger curls and waves in the centre of the skin. The wool is extremely silky and smooth to the touch – its like nothing else!

The shearlings are heavy and so are suitable for use on the floor, or draped on a chair, sofa or bed. They would make up into fabulous scatter cushions, and also can easily be panelled up to cover upholstery, in place of fabric or leather. We are happy to arrange panelling for you with a London based specialist furrier, please call us to discuss the details. Unlike our other leather items we sell our Gotland shearlings only by the skin at a set price as they are consistently sized.

Cleaning Advice

Despite its pale colour, this shearling will naturally be good at repelling stains and dirt due to the natural oils in the fibres. Simply combing your fingers through the fleece, gently teasing out the wool will help maintain the shearling; you can also shake a small amount of water on the skin as you do this to keep the shearling looking at its best. Regular shaking-out or vacuuming will help keep the shearling looking at its best. It can be hand washed with mild detergent, or spot cleaned if it is used on fixed upholstery.

Panel Size Information

Sheep skins are narrowest in width beneath their shoulders where the shape naturally scoops inwards. Should you require a rectangular panel, the maximum width will be determined by this narrow point.

If an alternative shape is requested (circle, tall and thin rectangle, square etc.) it may be possible to cut a shape with a wider width, or a taller length.
